As part of the government’s 2026 integration strategy, the English language proficiency bar has been raised. For many, the jump from CEFR B1 to B2 represents a significant shift in the level of communication required to live and work permanently in the UK.
The Timeline for Change
The transition to the higher B2 standard is happening in phases:
- 8 January 2026: The requirement for Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual (HPI) visas increased to CEFR B2 for all new entry clearance and permission to stay applications.
- 26 March 2027: The higher B2 standard will be extended to all Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or settlement applications for the majority of immigration categories.
What is CEFR B2?
CEFR B2 is considered “Upper Intermediate.” While B1 focuses on managing everyday situations and familiar topics, B2 requires:
- Understanding the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.
- Technical discussions within your field of specialization.
- The ability to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
How to Prepare for the Higher Bar
Applicants planning for long-term residency should take the following steps well in advance:
- Early Assessment: Don’t wait until your 5-year visa mark. Take a practice B2 test early to identify gaps in your speaking and listening skills.
- Verify SELT Providers: Ensure your chosen test center is approved for the new B2 standard. Certificates for B1-only tests will result in application refusals for routes where B2 is now mandatory.
- Degree Verification (Ecctis): If you are relying on a degree taught in English, you must obtain a statement of comparability from Ecctis that confirms the degree meets the B2 equivalent baseline.
